A new version of Hypertable, an open source database modeled after Google’s BigTable, has been released. It’s unclear what the changes are, but if you’re interested in playing with the latest release, head to their site and check it out.
A debate is brewing over whether or not MySQL 5.1 is ready for General Availability. Sun/MySQL declared the latest release, version 5.1.30, as GA (ready for General Availability), a designation which historically has meant that all major bugs and issues have been addressed and fixed. This is the first major release of MySQL after its acquisition by Sun, and one of MySQL’s founders is taking issue with the readiness of the code (though he’s careful to not blame Sun for jumping the gun). Michael Widenius, better known in the MySQL community as Monty, argues that there are still too many bugs in this release, and that MySQL has rushed it out the door.
A new version of HAProxy has been released that fixes a bug in the connection queue handling. Full details can be found at the HAProxy site.

A new version of Lighttpd, 1.4.20, has been released. Lots of small enhancements and bug fixes are included in the new release, including a few security patches. A full list of changes can be found here.
New versions of HAProxy on two branches, 1.3.15.4 and 1.3.14.8, were released, prompted by a bug in the handling of the maxconn parameter. More info can be found at the HAProxy site.
Today Amazon announced a persistent block storage system for EC2 called Elastic Block Storage. Now your disk-based EC2 data isn’t at risk for vanishing forever if your instance dies. While Amazon’s S3 service has always provided a persistent storage option, this new feature can be mounted as a block device, unlike S3 (at least, without fuse tricks).
A “tech preview” version of Varnish, everybody’s latest favorite reverse proxy server, has been released. This is the preview for version 2.0, and includes lots of new features like URL rewrites, backend selection and load distribution, and lots of other enhancements. See the full list here.
